Khalistan Slogans Raised at Golden Temple on Operation Blue Star Anniversary; Security Tightened in Amritsar
Amritsar (Punjab): Tensions resurfaced in Amritsar on Friday as pro-Khalistan slogans were reportedly raised inside the Golden Temple (Harmandir Sahib) complex during events marking the 42nd anniversary of Operation Blue Star. A large number of people gathered near the Akal Takht, with some participants carrying posters of Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale and other symbols associated with the separatist movement.
June 6 remains one of the most sensitive dates in India’s modern political and security history. On this day in 1984, the Indian Army carried out Operation Blue Star to remove armed militants who had taken positions inside the Golden Temple complex. Bhindranwale, who had emerged as a prominent figure during the Khalistan movement, was killed during the military operation.
Given the sensitivity of the occasion, Punjab Police, intelligence agencies, and paramilitary forces remained on high alert throughout the day. Security arrangements were significantly strengthened around the Golden Temple and adjoining areas to prevent any untoward incident. Despite slogan-shouting and demonstrations within the complex, authorities reported that the overall situation remained under control.
Historical Background
Operation Blue Star was launched between June 1 and June 8, 1984, after armed militants led by Bhindranwale had fortified themselves inside the Golden Temple complex. The operation aimed to restore law and order and remove militants from the shrine. The military action resulted in casualties on all sides and caused damage to the Akal Takht, one of Sikhism’s most important religious institutions.
The operation remains a deeply emotional and controversial chapter in Indian history. While many view it as a necessary action against armed militancy, others continue to regard it as a painful event that affected Sikh religious sentiments.
The aftermath of Operation Blue Star had far-reaching consequences. Later in 1984, Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was assassinated by her Sikh bodyguards, triggering anti-Sikh riots in several parts of the country.
Why June 6 Remains Sensitive
Every year, June 6 is observed by various groups to commemorate those who died during Operation Blue Star. Religious gatherings and remembrance ceremonies are organized, while some separatist and radical elements use the occasion to express support for the Khalistan movement and raise political demands.
Security agencies closely monitor such events due to concerns about public order and the potential for inflammatory speeches or slogans. Authorities have reiterated that peaceful religious observances are permitted, but any activity violating the law or threatening public harmony will be dealt with strictly.
Several videos and images from this year’s gathering circulated widely on social media, prompting authorities to increase monitoring of online content as well. Officials emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and communal harmony in Punjab, a state that has made significant progress since the turbulent years of militancy.
