On Somvati Amavasya, thousands of devotees took a holy dip in the sacred Ganga and circumambulated the Peepal tree.

Varanasi (Uttar Pradesh): On Monday, the auspicious occasion of Somvati Amavasya, thousands of devotees in the spiritual city of Kashi took a holy dip in the sacred Ganga. After bathing in the river, women circumambulated the Peepal tree, offered water, and then visited Shiva temples to offer prayers.

Despite the cold and fog, devotees began arriving at the ghats early in the morning. Ghats like the ancient Dashashwamedh Ghat, Sheetala Ghat, Ahilyabai Ghat, Manmandir Ghat, Panchganga Ghat, and Assi Ghat witnessed a large gathering of devotees for the holy dip. Post the Ganga bath, devotees proceeded to circumambulate the Peepal tree and offered water before paying their respects at the Kashi Vishwanath temple. Women also gathered for prayers and rituals at various Shiva temples and Peepal trees located in different neighborhoods of the city.

Dr. Mridul Mishra, founder of the Shiva Worship Committee, highlighted the significance of Somvati Amavasya in Sanatan Dharma. He explained that a holy dip in the Ganga on this day grants immense spiritual merit, removes life’s hardships, fulfills desires, and leads to salvation. It is equivalent to performing hundreds of Ashwamedha Yagnas. He also emphasized the importance of rituals like offering prayers and performing Shraddha for ancestors on this day, which brings peace and happiness to life. Additionally, he mentioned that worshiping the Peepal tree and circumambulating it 108 times while tying a sacred thread can fulfill one’s wishes.
