64.64 Crore Voters Set World Record in Lok Sabha Elections 2024, ECI Releases Report
New Delhi: The Lok Sabha elections of 2024 witnessed a record-breaking participation of 64.64 crore voters, setting a new global benchmark. A total of 12,459 nominations were filed in 2024, compared to 11,692 in 2019. The number of candidates increased to 8,360 in 2024 from 8,054 in 2019. The Election Commission of India (ECI) shared these details in its recently released report on Lok Sabha Elections 2024.
According to the report, women voters played a pivotal role in elevating democratic participation to new heights, marking a significant milestone for women’s suffrage. The average voter turnout among women was 65.78%, slightly surpassing the 65.55% turnout among men. Additionally, the number of women candidates increased to 800 in 2024 from 726 in 2019. Notably, there was a 46.4% surge in third-gender voters compared to 2019. The number of registered differently-abled voters rose from 61,67,482 in 2019 to 90,28,696 in 2024. Furthermore, the number of polling stations requiring re-polling decreased from 540 in 2019 to just 40 in 2024.
The ECI has also published 42 statistical reports on Lok Sabha Elections 2024, along with 14 reports each for the four simultaneous state assembly elections. These reports are expected to serve as invaluable resources for academics, researchers, and election observers worldwide, offering in-depth analysis and policy insights.
