Delhi Excise Policy Case: Kejriwal-Sisodia acquitted in liquor policy case

New Delhi: In a significant development in the widely discussed Delhi excise policy case, the Rouse Avenue Court on Friday acquitted former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, former Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, and several other accused in the alleged corruption case linked to the excise policy.
The court observed that there was no prima facie evidence of any criminal conspiracy in the matter. The hearing was being conducted in the case registered by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). In its order, the court said that the material placed before it was insufficient to frame charges against the accused, granting them relief in the case.
However, despite the relief in the CBI case, Arvind Kejriwal has not received any relief in the money laundering case registered by the Enforcement Directorate (ED), which continues to be under judicial consideration.
According to sources, the CBI is not satisfied with the verdict and is preparing to challenge it. A senior agency official indicated that the investigation agency may soon approach the Delhi High Court to appeal against the order.

Reacting to the court’s decision, Aam Aadmi Party’s national convenor Arvind Kejriwal said the verdict has rejected the allegations repeatedly made by the Bharatiya Janata Party regarding the alleged liquor scam.
“Over the last few years, the BJP repeatedly accused us of a liquor scam. Today the court has dismissed all those allegations and acquitted all the accused. We have full faith in the judiciary. Truth has prevailed,” Kejriwal said.
He further alleged that top leaders of the Aam Aadmi Party were jailed as part of an attempt to weaken the party. “This entire case was fabricated. Kejriwal is not corrupt. The only wealth I have earned in life is honesty,” he said, adding that political opponents should seek power through public service rather than false cases.
After the verdict, Kejriwal reached his residence along with Manish Sisodia, where he was welcomed by family members.
Kejriwal’s lawyer Vivek Jain said the criminal justice system exists to punish real offenders and should not be used to level baseless accusations. He noted that the court examined all statements and evidence presented by the CBI before acquitting the accused, concluding that none of the allegations could be sustained.
Reacting to the verdict, Manish Sisodia said, “Today once again we feel proud of the Constitution of India. Truth has prevailed.”
The Delhi excise policy case has remained a major political and legal controversy for the past few years, with several leaders and officials investigated in connection with the policy. With the latest ruling, the next course of action will largely depend on whether the CBI challenges the verdict in the High Court, while the legal proceedings in the money laundering case will continue separately.
