Gujarat Local Body Election Results 2026: BJP Takes Early Lead; AAP and Congress Open Accounts
Ahmedabad (Gujrat): Vote counting is underway in the 2026 Gujarat local body elections, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) securing an early lead across several civic bodies. The polls, held on April 26, are being seen as a key indicator of voter sentiment ahead of next year’s विधानसभा elections.
Counting is currently taking place across 15 municipal corporations, 84 municipalities, 34 district panchayats, and 260 taluka panchayats, covering a total of around 9,200 seats. More than 4.18 crore voters were eligible to participate in this large-scale democratic exercise.
Even before counting began, the BJP had gained an advantage by winning 43 seats unopposed across the 15 municipal corporations.
Voter Turnout
According to the Election Commission, voter turnout stood at:
- 55.1% in municipal corporations
- 65.53% in municipalities
- 66.64% in district panchayats
- 67.26% in taluka panchayats
The relatively higher turnout in rural and semi-urban bodies reflects strong grassroots participation.
Congress Registers Key Win in Rajkot
The Indian National Congress (Congress) has opened its account with a notable victory in Ward No. 16 of Rajkot. The win marks a turnaround from the previous election when the party had lost the seat. Local issues, particularly an anti-encroachment drive in the Jangleshwar area and its subsequent rollback, are believed to have influenced voter sentiment in Congress’s favor.
BJP Eyes Gains in Surat, Strengthens Rural Hold
In Surat, the BJP is leading in Ward No. 4 of Kapodra and is likely to wrest the seat from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which had won it in 2021.
The BJP has also opened its account in Rajkot district by winning a taluka panchayat seat in Dhoraji. Candidate Taraba Bhikhubha Vaghela secured victory from Khambha, while the party strengthened its presence in Panchmahal district with multiple wins, including in Jambughoda and Halol talukas.
AAP Opens Account in Saurashtra Region
The AAP has also made early gains, registering victories in districts like Gir Somnath district, Junagadh district, and Amreli district.
In Gir Somnath, AAP candidates won taluka panchayat seats, including the Ambalash seat. In Junagadh, the party secured three seats in Malia Hatina’s Amarapur taluka panchayat, while in Amreli, it clinched a victory in Bagasara, boosting its early tally.
Bigger Political Signal
The results of these local body elections are expected to offer crucial insights into the political mood of Gujarat ahead of the विधानसभा elections. While the BJP appears to be maintaining its dominance, early gains by Congress and AAP suggest a competitive electoral landscape in pockets of the state.
As counting continues, a clearer picture of the final outcome is expected to emerge later in the day.
