Mamata Banerjee Rules Out Resignation After Poll Defeat, Says “No Question of Stepping Down”

Kolkata: After the defeat in the West Bengal Assembly elections, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee firmly dismissed speculation surrounding her resignation, stating that there is absolutely no question of stepping down from her post. She claimed that her party had achieved a “moral victory” and therefore resignation was not an option.

Rejecting the election results, the Trinamool Congress chief asserted that her party had not truly lost the mandate, alleging that circumstances were deliberately created against them. She expressed confidence that the TMC would make a strong comeback and continue its political battle.

Addressing a press conference, the caretaker Chief Minister levelled serious allegations against the Central government and central security forces. She claimed that atrocities were committed in the name of conducting elections and described the atmosphere as something she had not witnessed since 2004.

“This was an extremely frightening situation. The kind of pressure and interference witnessed during the election process is deeply concerning for democracy,” Banerjee said.

She also repeated allegations of misconduct and physical assault at the counting centre in Bhawanipur, claiming that she was pushed around and kicked in her stomach and back.

The TMC supremo further said that her party’s fight was not only against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) but also against the Election Commission of India. She hinted that her party was preparing legal and political action against the poll panel, although she declined to reveal details of the strategy at this stage.

“We will take action and retaliate, but our strategy will remain confidential for now. Everything will be revealed at the right time,” she said.

Mamata Banerjee also stated that she had received reports of some TMC workers joining the BJP out of fear and pressure. She said she would have no objection if the BJP ensured their safety.

Accusing political opponents of intimidating her supporters, Banerjee said that if party workers were forced to take such decisions for their personal security, she could understand their situation.

Her remarks have triggered fresh political tensions in West Bengal. Despite the electoral setback, the Trinamool Congress has made it clear that it intends to adopt an aggressive opposition stance and work towards reclaiming its political ground in the state.
