Tensions Escalate Within INDIA Alliance in Jharkhand After Rajya Sabha Election Result; Congress, RJD and CPI(ML) Trade Charges

Ranchi: The recent Rajya Sabha election results in Jharkhand have brought the internal differences within the INDIA alliance into the open. Despite the ruling alliance enjoying a comfortable majority in the state assembly, the unexpected defeat of the Congress candidate has triggered a fresh round of accusations and counter-accusations among leaders of the Congress, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), and Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) [CPI(ML)].

Even before the Rajya Sabha election, reports of disagreements between the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) and Congress over candidate selection and political coordination had surfaced. Following the election outcome, mistrust and tensions among alliance partners have intensified further.

Jharkhand Congress in-charge K. Raju blamed RJD and CPI(ML) for the defeat, alleging that both parties betrayed the alliance. He claimed that Congress received all 16 of its votes and also secured four additional votes from JMM, taking the total tally to 20. Despite this, the Congress candidate lost, indicating that some alliance partners did not extend the expected support.

K. Raju said the result was a consequence of what he described as “betrayal” by RJD and CPI(ML). His remarks further deepened the political controversy.

Reacting sharply to the allegations, Sanjay Prasad Yadav, RJD MLA and a minister in the state government, said that RJD does not indulge in “deceptive politics” and has its own independent identity. He asserted that all four RJD MLAs had voted in favour of the Congress candidate.

Sanjay Yadav said he was fully aware of the circumstances under which the allegations were made. Targeting the Congress leadership, he argued that the party should first introspect before blaming others. He questioned how the Congress leadership, which was reportedly in constant touch with its legislators, failed to understand what was actually happening within its own ranks.

RJD National General Secretary Bhola Yadav also rejected the Congress allegations outright, stating that RJD is not politically dependent on any party. He said Congress should engage in serious self-reflection before making public statements and avoid levelling accusations against alliance partners without evidence.

Meanwhile, CPI(ML) also dismissed the allegations as baseless and clarified that both of its MLAs had voted in favour of the INDIA alliance candidate. Party leaders said Congress should look within its own organisation and strategy to identify the reasons for the defeat rather than blaming its allies.

Political observers believe that the Rajya Sabha election result is not merely an electoral setback but also a reflection of the coordination challenges and growing mistrust within the INDIA alliance in Jharkhand. It remains to be seen whether the constituent parties can resolve these differences or whether the controversy will have a lasting impact on future political strategies.

For now, the dispute that has emerged after the Rajya Sabha election appears to be creating new political debates and reshaping equations in Jharkhand’s political landscape.
