Glasgow: India enjoyed a spectacular fifth day at the Commonwealth Games 2026, winning a total of six medals and taking its overall medal tally to 10. The biggest highlight of the day was Sharmila Dhankhad’s historic gold medal in para athletics. Indian athletes also delivered impressive performances in weightlifting and athletics, securing four silver and two bronze medals.

Sharmila Dhankhad Creates History

In the Women’s Para Shot Put F57 event, Sharmila Dhankhad claimed the gold medal with a season-best throw of 9.81 metres. With this remarkable achievement, she became the first Indian athlete to win a Commonwealth Games gold medal in para athletics. Her victory also ended India’s 20-year wait for a gold medal in the discipline.

In the same event, Shilpa Shaila won the bronze medal with a personal best throw of 7.26 metres, adding another medal to India’s tally.

India Continues Weightlifting Dominance

Indian weightlifters maintained their impressive run at the Games. In the Women’s 53kg category, Gyaneshwari Yadav lifted a total of 111kg to secure the silver medal. Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated her on social media platform X for her outstanding performance.

In the Women’s 58kg event, Bindiyarani Devi claimed the bronze medal, while Valluri Ajay Babu won the silver medal in the Men’s 79kg category with a total lift of 330kg. With these performances, India completed a remarkable record of winning medals in all six weightlifting events contested so far.

Silver for Sarvesh in High Jump

In the Men’s High Jump, Sarvesh Anil Kushare produced an excellent performance to win the silver medal. Although he was unable to clear 2.28 metres, his best effort was enough to secure second place and add another medal to India’s growing collection.
