Kolkata Rape-Murder Case: Major Action Against Former Principal of RG Kar Hospital, Medical Council Revokes License
Kolkata : The West Bengal Medical Council (WBMC) has revoked the medical practitioner’s registration of Dr. Sandeep Ghosh, former Principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Dr. Ghosh was arrested in connection with both the rape-murder case at RG Kar Medical College and allegations of financial irregularities related to the institution. Following his arrest by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on September 2 for alleged financial misconduct, WBMC issued a show-cause notice to Dr. Ghosh on September 7, asking him to explain within three days why his medical registration should not be canceled.
In the notice, the Medical Council stated that after 13 days had passed without any explanation from Dr. Ghosh, the council decided to remove his name from the register of licensed medical practitioners, in accordance with Section 25(A)(ii) of the Bengal Medical Act, 1914 (Amended) and Section 37(iii) of the Code of Medical Ethics.
Dr. Ghosh was also accused of instructing subordinate officials to expedite the transfer of the deceased body to the morgue. The body of a postgraduate female doctor was found in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College on August 9, bearing severe injuries. The following day, Kolkata Police arrested civic volunteer Sanjay Roy based on CCTV footage, which showed him entering the seminar hall at 4:03 a.m. on the day of the incident. On August 13, the Calcutta High Court transferred the investigation from Kolkata Police to the CBI, which took over the case on August 14.
This development has sent shockwaves through the medical community and highlights the severity of the charges against Dr. Ghosh, including both criminal and ethical violations.
