Born on September 23, 1908, in Simaria Ghat village of Munger (now Begusarai), Bihar, Dinkar came from a modest farming family. He completed his early education in his village and higher education in Patna. He later served in government positions, including Sub-Registrar and Deputy Director in the Department of Information and Public Relations, but his deep passion for poetry led him to leave government service and dedicate himself to writing.

Dinkar went on to serve as Professor and Head of the Hindi Department at Langat Singh College, Bihar University, and later as Vice-Chancellor of Bhagalpur University. He was also a Hindi officer in the Rajya Sabha.

Some of his most celebrated works include Renuka, Samdhini, Kurukshetra, Rashmirathi, Parashuram Ki Prateeksha, Urvashi, and Rasvanti. His monumental prose work “Sanskriti Ke Chaar Adhyay” is considered a classic.

Poet Harivansh Rai Bachchan once remarked that Dinkar deserved two Jnanpith Awards – one for poetry and another for prose. He was conferred the Padma Bhushan by the Government of India. The great poet passed away on April 24, 1974, in Chennai.

Though no longer physically present, Dinkar continues to live through his immortal writings. On his birth anniversary, the nation bows in reverence to the poet of valor and vision.
