Bengaluru Test: Indian Innings Collapses for 46, Matt Henry Takes Five, O’Rourke Grabs Four Wickets Five Indian Batsmen Fail to Open Their Account
Bengaluru: On the second day of the first Test match against New Zealand at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, India’s first innings was wrapped up for a mere 46 runs. Rishabh Pant was the top scorer with 20 runs, while five Indian batsmen failed to open their accounts, and three others could not score more than three runs.
After the first day was washed out due to rain, Indian captain Rohit Sharma won the toss on Thursday and chose to bat first. However, the decision backfired as India had a disastrous start. The pitch at Chinnaswamy offered both swing and bounce to the Kiwi pacers, making it difficult for the Indian batsmen.
India’s troubles began when Tim Southee bowled out captain Rohit Sharma for just 2 runs. Following this, Virat Kohli (0) and Sarfaraz Khan (0) were dismissed without scoring. Kohli was sent back by William O’Rourke, while Matt Henry claimed Sarfaraz’s wicket. Rishabh Pant and Yashasvi Jaiswal managed a small partnership of 21 runs, but at 31, O’Rourke struck again, dismissing Jaiswal for 13.
After Jaiswal’s dismissal, KL Rahul (0) and Ravindra Jadeja (0) fell quickly. Rahul was bowled by O’Rourke, while Henry took Jadeja’s wicket. By lunch, India had lost six wickets for just 34 runs.
Post-lunch, the Indian innings could not hold on for long, adding only 12 more runs before the remaining four batsmen were dismissed. Only Rishabh Pant (20) and Yashasvi Jaiswal (13) managed to reach double figures. Meanwhile, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, Sarfaraz Khan, Ravindra Jadeja, and Ravichandran Ashwin all fell for ducks.
For New Zealand, Matt Henry was the standout bowler, taking 5 wickets, while William O’Rourke claimed 4. Tim Southee contributed with 1 wicket.
