Former Uttarakhand Chief Minister Bhuvan Chandra Khanduri Passes Away at 91
Dehradun: Former Uttarakhand Chief Minister and senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader Bhuvan Chandra Khanduri passed away on Tuesday after a prolonged illness. He was 91. His demise has triggered a wave of grief across Uttarakhand and the country’s political and social circles.
According to reports, Khanduri was undergoing treatment at a hospital in Dehradun, where he breathed his last. His daughter and Uttarakhand Assembly Speaker Ritu Khanduri confirmed the news of his passing.
In an emotional statement, Ritu Khanduri said that it is with deep sorrow that she informs everyone that their respected “General Sahib” is no more. His son, Manish Khanduri, also expressed his grief on social media, saying his father was everything to him — not just a father, but also a guide and someone he regarded as God-like.
Several senior leaders, including Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, condoled his demise. CM Dhami described Khanduri’s death as an irreparable loss to Uttarakhand and Indian politics. He said General Khanduri’s life of honesty, discipline and public service would continue to inspire generations.
Bhuvan Chandra Khanduri had served in the Indian Army and rose to the rank of Lieutenant General, earning him the respectful title of “General Sahib.” After retiring from military service, he entered politics and emerged as one of the BJP’s most respected leaders.
He served as the Chief Minister of Uttarakhand twice. His tenure is remembered for administrative discipline, transparency, and developmental initiatives. He also made significant contributions as the Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways.
Throughout his political career, Khanduri was known for his simplicity, integrity and disciplined leadership. His contribution to Uttarakhand’s development and good governance will always be remembered.
With his passing, the BJP and Uttarakhand politics have lost an experienced statesman and guiding force. Details regarding his final rites are expected to be announced soon.
