Massive Devastation in Tibet Due to Earthquake; Chinese State Media Reports 53 Dead and 62 Injured

Kathmandu: A powerful earthquake struck large parts of Tibet and Nepal on Tuesday morning, causing significant devastation in Tibet. The 7.1-magnitude quake has reportedly claimed the lives of more than 50 people and left many others injured. Most buildings in the affected areas have suffered damage, with some completely destroyed.

Centered in Tibet’s Shigatse region, the 7.1-magnitude earthquake has so far resulted in 53 confirmed deaths, according to reports. As per China’s state media outlet Xinhua, the death toll had reached 53 by 11 a.m., with 63 injured individuals being rushed to hospitals. The number of casualties continues to rise. Just an hour earlier, the death toll was reported to be 36, which climbed to 53 within an hour. With the large number of injured, the death toll is feared to increase further.

Visuals shared by China’s state TV channel CGTN show extensive damage in the Shigatse region of Tibet. A large number of houses and buildings have been damaged. Based on these images, it is suspected that more significant damage reports may emerge in the coming hours.

The earthquake, which struck the Shigatse region near the Nepal-China border, was also felt in southern Tibet, Nepal, India, Bhutan, and Bangladesh. However, there have been no reports of damage in Nepal so far.
