Mayawati Demands Action from Punjab Government over Vandalism of Dr. Ambedkar’s Statue in Amritsar

Lucknow (UP): In a deeply concerning incident, the statue of Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar, located near the Golden Temple on Heritage Street in Amritsar, Punjab, was vandalized. An attempt was also reportedly made to set fire near a copy of the Constitution placed nearby. Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) Chief Mayawati termed the act as “highly shameful.”

On Monday, Mayawati posted on social media platform X, condemning the incident and stating that such actions, resulting from government negligence, are utterly deplorable.

She called on the Punjab government, led by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), to take immediate and strict legal action against the culprits, emphasizing that such tragic and tension-inducing incidents should not be repeated in the future.

Mayawati’s Strong Statement

She remarked, “At a time when the entire nation was celebrating the historic day of the 76th Republic Day, marking the implementation of Baba Saheb’s Constitution, the desecration of Dr. Ambedkar’s statue is a matter of great shame, especially for the AAP government in Punjab.”

Mayawati also criticized the Congress Party, accusing them of hypocrisy. She pointed out that despite their historical neglect of Dr. Ambedkar, they held a Constitution Day rally in Mhow, Madhya Pradesh, which she described as a political gimmick aimed solely at electoral gains.

She added, “The consistent disregard for Dr. Ambedkar and his followers, coupled with the Congress’ failure to honor him adequately, exposes their political duplicity.”

Appeal to Voters

Amidst the ongoing Delhi Assembly elections, Mayawati urged voters, especially Dalit communities, to remain cautious of the “double standards” of the AAP, Congress, and BJP. She encouraged them to support the BSP, describing it as the true Ambedkarite party that represents their interests.

“It is in the best interest of the people to strengthen the BSP by voting for it,” she asserted.

The incident has sparked widespread outrage, with demands for swift action and accountability to ensure such acts are not repeated.
