Major Leap in Heart Care: Minimally Invasive Cardiac Procedures Rise by 25% in Mumbai

Mumbai : Mumbai is no longer just India’s financial capital; it is also rapidly emerging as a leading hub for advanced cardiac care. Over the past year, the city has witnessed a remarkable 25% increase in Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) and other minimally invasive cardiac procedures. Experts believe that modern technology, improved diagnostics, and growing awareness have opened new avenues of treatment for heart patients.
Aortic stenosis, a serious heart condition that primarily affects individuals above the age of 60, occurs when the heart’s aortic valve becomes narrowed, restricting blood flow to the body. Common symptoms include shortness of breath, chest pain, extreme fatigue, and dizziness. However, these symptoms are often mistaken for normal signs of aging, leading to delayed diagnosis and potentially severe complications.
Dr. Haresh Mehta, Director of Interventional and Structural Cardiology at the S. L. Raheja Hospital, says, “The adoption of minimally invasive cardiac therapies has grown significantly in Mumbai over the past few years. TAVR has provided patients with a lower-risk treatment option, enabling faster recovery and a better quality of life.”
While TAVR was initially reserved for high-risk patients, its use is now expanding among intermediate- and low-risk patients as well. Advanced imaging technologies, hybrid catheterization laboratories, and multidisciplinary teams of specialists are making the treatment of complex heart diseases safer and more effective.
A recently published international study has further reinforced the effectiveness of TAVR. The seven-year study, involving nearly 1,000 patients, found that the outcomes of TAVR and traditional open-heart surgery were largely comparable. Notably, most patients undergoing TAVR were able to leave the hospital within two to three days and return to their normal lives much sooner. Dr. Mehta adds, “Today, our goal extends beyond simply performing a successful procedure. We are equally focused on ensuring long-term health benefits and an improved quality of life for our patients.”
According to experts, with its growing expertise, cutting-edge technology, and expanding healthcare infrastructure, Mumbai is well on its way to becoming not only India’s leading destination for cardiac care but also a significant global center for advanced heart treatment in the years ahead.
