India to Elect Its Next Vice President on September 9, Announces Election Commission
New Delhi : The Election Commission has officially announced the schedule for the election of India’s next Vice President. The 14th Vice Presidential election will be held on September 9, 2025, ahead of the completion of the current Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar’s term, which ends on November 10, 2025.
According to the commission’s notification, the election process will begin on August 16, 2025, with the issuance of the formal notification. The last date for filing nominations is August 26, and scrutiny of nomination papers will take place on August 27. Candidates will have until August 29 to withdraw their nominations.
If necessary, polling will be conducted on September 9, from 10 AM to 5 PM in the Parliament House. Counting of votes and declaration of results will also take place on the same day.
The Vice President of India is elected by an electoral college comprising members of both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha, including nominated members. The election is conducted through a secret ballot and a single transferable vote system.
The Vice President holds the second highest constitutional office in India and also serves as the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha.
With the date now announced, all eyes are on the ruling coalition and the opposition to see who they nominate and how the political dynamics unfold in this crucial election.
