Mamata Banerjee Government Misleading on OBC Issue, Suvendu Adhikari to Approach Supreme Court

Kolkata (West Bengal): Leader of Opposition in West Bengal, Suvendu Adhikari, has accused the state government of misleading the Supreme Court regarding OBC reservations and has announced that he will take the matter to the apex court. Adhikari claims that the Mamata Banerjee-led government attempted to deceive the Supreme Court under the pretext of a new review of OBC reservations.

On March 18, the West Bengal government assured the Supreme Court that it would conduct a fresh survey to identify Other Backward Classes (OBCs) in the state and complete it within three months. This commitment was made after the state government challenged a Calcutta High Court order that had canceled all OBC certificates issued after 2010.

Allegations of Manipulation & Delay
Speaking to the media, Suvendu Adhikari alleged that the state government had initiated the survey even before obtaining the Supreme Court’s approval. He described this as a “deliberate delay”, aimed at benefiting a particular religious community. According to him, the complications arising from this process have put thousands of government job appointments in limbo.

He further accused the Mamata Banerjee government of disrespecting the Constitution, Parliament, and the judiciary. He pointed out that the politics of appeasement in West Bengal began during the Left Front regime, when members of a specific minority community were included in the OBC category. However, he alleged that the Trinamool Congress government has taken it even further.

Controversial OBC Expansion
Suvendu Adhikari claimed that the West Bengal government recently added 113 new communities to the OBC list, out of which only four were Hindu communities, while the remaining 109 belonged to a specific religious group. He alleged that the state government was preparing a “fabricated and imaginary” OBC list for political gains.

With these concerns, Suvendu Adhikari is now set to approach the Supreme Court to challenge the state government’s actions regarding OBC reservations.
