Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s Final Journey Begins; PM Modi to Attend
New Delhi: The mortal remains of former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh are being taken from the AICC headquarters to Nigam Bodh Ghat for his final rites. Dr. Singh, who served as India’s 13th Prime Minister, passed away late Thursday night at AIIMS Hospital in Delhi at the age of 92. His funeral will take place on Saturday, December 28, 2024, at 11:45 AM at Nigam Bodh Ghat. This information was shared by the Ministry of Home Affairs on Friday.
In a statement, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) announced, “The government has decided that Dr. Manmohan Singh’s funeral will be conducted with full state honors. The final rites will take place on December 28, 2024, at 11:45 AM at Nigam Bodh Ghat, New Delhi.” According to AIIMS, Dr. Singh was brought to its medical emergency unit at 8:06 PM on Thursday. Despite all efforts, he could not be saved and was declared dead at 9:51 PM.
Dr. Manmohan Singh, who retired from public life following Congress’s defeat to the BJP in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, made his last public appearance in the Rajya Sabha in August 2023, of which he was a member.

Congress Demands Memorial Site in Delhi
A meeting of the Congress Working Committee (CWC) was held at the AICC headquarters in Delhi to pay tribute to Dr. Manmohan Singh. The meeting was attended by party president Mallikarjun Kharge, CPP president Sonia Gandhi, Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, and other senior Congress leaders.
During the meeting, the Congress demanded that the central government allocate a memorial site along the Yamuna River in Delhi for Dr. Singh, in line with the memorials of other former Prime Ministers. The party emphasized that Dr. Singh, given his stature and contributions, deserved a befitting site for his memorial and final rites.
The CWC statement noted, “Congress mourns the loss of a true statesman, Dr. Manmohan Singh, whose life and work deeply shaped India’s destiny. Dr. Singh was a towering figure in India’s political and economic landscape, whose contributions transformed the nation and earned him global respect. As Finance Minister in the early 1990s, Dr. Singh was the architect of India’s economic liberalization.”
