Indian Hockey Stars Support Peace Through Sport on International Day of Sport for Development and Peace

New Delhi: On the occasion of the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace, observed annually on April 6, Indian hockey stars joined the global #WhiteCard campaign, showing solidarity for the movement promoting peace through sport. Much like other cards used in sports, the White Card carries powerful symbolism. However, unlike red or yellow cards that indicate penalties, the white card stands as a symbol of peace, inclusion, and hope.
According to Hockey India, this year’s campaign focuses on a pressing global issue: 460 million children live in conflict-affected areas, deprived of safe spaces like playgrounds and access to quality education. In such challenging environments, sport becomes far more than just a game — it serves as a lifeline, nurturing vital life skills like cooperation, mutual respect, and resilience.
Players from the Indian Women’s Hockey Team shared heartfelt messages to mark the occasion:
Veteran forward Lalremsiami stated in a message via Hockey India,
“Sport has the power to break barriers and unite people regardless of their background or language. The #WhiteCard campaign reflects the values we live by on and off the field — respect, teamwork, and peace. I’m proud to raise my White Card and call for a more inclusive and safe world for children everywhere.”
Indian team goalkeeper Savita added,
“I have seen firsthand how sport can transform lives. It gave me confidence and purpose — and it can do the same for children in conflict zones. By joining the #WhiteCard campaign, we hope to spread the message that every child deserves a safe space to play, learn, and grow in peace.”
Emerging team star and drag-flicker Deepika shared,
“The hockey field taught me discipline, courage, and respect. Sport isn’t just about winning medals; it’s about building character and communities. This #WhiteCard campaign represents our commitment to peace and a brighter future for the next generation.”
The campaign reflects how sport can act as a bridge in troubled times, and the involvement of India’s hockey stars reinforces the role of athletes as ambassadors of peace, unity, and positive change.
