Tawang: In a major step towards building a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable township, the Tawang District Administration organized an awareness programme on the Solid Waste Management (SWM) Guidelines 2026 at Old Market on Tuesday. The initiative aimed to educate citizens, traders, and stakeholders about scientific waste management and the importance of waste segregation at the source.

The programme was attended by Assistant Commissioner-cum-Town Magistrate Nawang Thutan, members of the Women’s Welfare Association (WWA), Secretaries of Old Market and Nehru Market, members of the Market Welfare Committee, the Material Recovery Facility (MRF) operator, officials from the Department of Urban Affairs, along with local shopkeepers and residents.

The awareness session focused on the implementation of four-way waste segregation at source and highlighted the responsibilities of Bulk Waste Generators under the SWM Guidelines 2026. Participants were educated on the proper segregation of biodegradable, recyclable, domestic hazardous, and sanitary waste, as well as scientific waste management practices to reduce pollution and improve public sanitation.

Addressing the gathering, Assistant Commissioner-cum-Town Magistrate Nawang Thutan stressed that effective solid waste management begins with individual responsibility. He urged shopkeepers, business establishments, and residents to strictly follow source segregation practices and cooperate with the district administration in transforming Tawang into a model town for cleanliness and sustainable waste management.

Dawa Tashi, Secretary of the Market Welfare Committee, Old Market, appealed to traders to actively support the implementation of the SWM Guidelines by ensuring proper waste segregation and minimizing the use of single-use plastics.

Representatives of the Women’s Welfare Association (WWA), the MRF operator, and officials from the Department of Urban Affairs also addressed the gathering, emphasizing the importance of community participation, responsible waste disposal, and efficient recycling to protect the environment.

As part of the awareness campaign, cloth shopping bags were distributed among participants to encourage the use of eco-friendly alternatives and support the ongoing drive to eliminate single-use plastics from daily market activities.

The District Administration appealed to citizens, market associations, and business establishments to actively participate in the waste management initiative and adopt sustainable practices to ensure a cleaner, healthier, and environmentally responsible Tawang.
